UP 3985 Steam at Klamath Falls

In September 2005, Union Pacific sent its Challenger 3985 (4-6-6-4) on a long circuit west to Sacramento, Klamath Falls, Eugene, Portland and back home again. I managed to catch it at Klamath Falls on Sept. 7 as it left for Eugene. The newest heritage loco (UP 1983 Western pacific) was on hand to provide some diesel assistance.

The trip to Eugene went smoothly, with brief stops at Chemult and Oakridge for routine maintenance. An additional stop was made just west of Cascade Summit to take on water after climbing the hill. It was tough keeping up with the big steamer on the highway. She was running at speed and the railroad belonged to her!
