Had a great time Sunday railfanning with Dave and his wife. The weather was near perfect (at least for the Northwest). One thing Dave didnt mention, was the fact that Kalama was the birthplace of the Northern Pacific Railroad. (There’s an information board up on the pedestrian bridge over the 2 mainlines).

Across from the tracks are wonderful city parks, with a playground, volleyball courts, picnic areas and wonderful panoramas of the river and river traffic.

Sunday provided a lot of train action both north and south bound. Weekdays should have even more freight action.
If you have an I Phone, you can connect up to Railroad Radio.Net and listen to the Seattle Sub-Centraila South radio traffic.
It was a wonderful day. Kalama is easily one of the best railfan sites within the Portland region. Hope to see you there sometime!

I was hoping someone closer to the Stampede line would chime in, but since no one has, I'll pass on what I've heard. It sounds like traffic is up and steady, but in Stampede terms, that may mean 4 or 5 trains a day and not all of those during daylight hours. Check Brian Ambrose's blog for his insight: http://stampedesubblog.qstation.org

Apart from being unqualified due to my color blindness, I prefer to watch the trains from afar, rather than while being on them. Plus a railroader's life would never allow me to do what I'm doing now.

That will be a memorable trip! My mother remembers making that trip before it was a "detour" on the Southern Pacific.
